Viewfinder
A viewfinder is the small window on a camera that the photographer looks through to frame a shot. It shows the scene the lens will record, so composition and focus can be judged before the shutter fires. Viewfinders come in two main types. An optical viewfinder uses glass, mirrors, or a prism to show the real scene. A DSLR bounces light from the lens up to the eyepiece with a mirror, and a rangefinder uses a separate window beside the lens. An electronic viewfinder (EVF) is a tiny screen behind the eyepiece. It displays a live feed from the sensor, which is how mirrorless cameras work. Many compact cameras and all phones skip the viewfinder and rely on the rear screen alone.

How a viewfinder affects photography
The eyepiece shuts out everything around the frame, so distractions at the edges and a tilted horizon are easier to spot. Pressing the camera to the face also steadies it: the head adds a third point of contact, which reduces shake at slow shutter speeds. In bright sun, an eyepiece stays readable when a rear screen washes out.
The two types show different things. An optical viewfinder shows the scene with no lag and no battery drain, but it cannot show how the exposure will look. An electronic viewfinder previews exposure, white balance, and depth of field as the settings change. It can also overlay focus peaking or a magnified view for manual focus, and it brightens a dark scene so framing at night is easier than through glass. The trade-offs are battery use and a slight delay during fast action.
Two specs describe a viewfinder. Coverage is how much of the final frame it shows. At 100% coverage, what is seen is exactly what is recorded; at 95%, a thin strip along the edges appears in the photo unseen. Magnification is how large the view looks to the eye. A big, bright finder makes fine framing and manual focus easier.
Tips for working with a viewfinder
Set the diopter first. The small dial beside the eyepiece matches the view to the photographer's eyesight, so the frame looks sharp without glasses.
Check the edges of the frame before pressing the shutter. Stray objects and cut-off hands hide there.
Turn on grid lines in an electronic viewfinder to keep horizons level and to place subjects on the rule of thirds.
Use the eyepiece in bright sun and switch to live view on the rear screen for low or high angles. Most cameras swap between the two with a button or an eye sensor.
Keep the other eye open for street or sports work with a rangefinder or a large optical finder. It shows action entering the frame before it arrives.

Leaving it out saves size, weight, and cost. Phones, many compact cameras, and some entry-level mirrorless bodies compose only on the rear screen, which works well indoors and for casual use. Some of these cameras accept an add-on electronic viewfinder in the hot shoe. Photographers who shoot in bright light, use long lenses, or want a steadier hold usually prefer a built-in viewfinder.

An optical viewfinder on a DSLR shows the scene at the widest aperture, so the view looks shallower than a photo taken at f/11. A hybrid viewfinder combines an optical window and an electronic display in one eyepiece. In optical mode it works like a rangefinder finder, showing the real scene with bright frame lines. A lever switches to a full electronic view, or overlays a small electronic panel in the corner for a magnified focus check. Fujifilm's X-Pro and X100 series use this design. It offers the clarity of glass with the previews of an EVF.
