Rangefinder
A rangefinder is a camera that focuses by lining up two images instead of looking through the lens. The photographer frames the scene through a viewfinder window set above and beside the lens. In the middle of that view, a small bright focusing patch shows a second image of the scene. Turning the focus ring moves the patch, and when the two images merge into one, the subject is in focus. The design ruled film cameras for decades, and Leica's M series still uses it today.
The window layout gives a rangefinder away at a glance. On the Leica M8 below, the viewfinder sits at the top corner of the body, next to the smaller windows that feed the focusing patch.
Why photographers use rangefinders
Rangefinder cameras are small and quiet. Nothing flips up inside the body like the mirror in a DSLR, so the shutter makes little more than a click. Street and documentary photographers have trusted the design for nearly a century; Henri Cartier-Bresson chased the decisive moment with a 35mm film rangefinder. The viewfinder also shows space outside the bright frame lines which mark the picture's edges, so the photographer can watch a subject walk toward the frame, and the view never blacks out during the exposure.
The design has limits. Because the viewfinder sits beside the lens, framing shifts slightly at close distances, an error called parallax. Depth of field never shows in the viewfinder, and the focusing patch grows imprecise with telephoto lenses longer than about 135mm. Mirrorless cameras answer those problems with electronic viewfinders, yet many photographers keep choosing rangefinders for the direct, mechanical shooting experience.
Tips for shooting with a rangefinder
Focus on a vertical edge, such as a door frame or a lamp post. Straight lines make it easy to see when the two images line up.
Use zone focusing for street photography. Setting the distance in advance lets depth of field cover the scene, with no need to refocus for every frame.
Frame loosely for close subjects. Parallax grows as the subject gets closer, so leaving room at the edges allows a crop later.
Check the lens cap before shooting. The viewfinder does not look through the lens, so the camera will fire a whole roll with the cap on.
Keep both eyes open. A rangefinder covers only part of the face, which makes it easier to follow the scene and stay discreet.
