Non-destructive editing is a way of working on photos that leaves the original file untouched. Instead of rewriting the image's pixels, the software saves each adjustment as an instruction: brighten by half a stop, cool the white balance, crop to a square. The screen shows the finished result, but the source file stays exactly as the camera wrote it, so every edit can be changed or undone later.

Why photographers use non-destructive editing

Opening the photo a year later shows every slider where it was left, ready to change. Exporting bakes the edits into a new JPEG, while the source file stays clean.
