Why photographers convert to black and white

Most digital cameras record color by default, so black and white work usually starts with a color file. That file holds more information than an in-camera black and white JPEG. A photo shot in RAW format keeps full color data, so the editor can darken a blue sky until the clouds glow or lighten red and orange tones to smooth skin. These moves are the digital version of the colored filters film photographers screw onto a lens.

Photographers also convert when color works against a picture. A bright sign in a street scene or a color cast under mixed light pulls the eye away from the subject. Removing color hands the picture to light, shape, and texture, and ties it to the long tradition of monochrome photography.

Tips for a black and white conversion

  • Skip the saturation slider. Dragging saturation to zero turns different colors into the same flat gray. Editing apps have a dedicated black and white tool with per-color control.

  • Work the color mix sliders. Darkening blue deepens skies and water, while lifting orange and red brightens skin.

  • Add contrast after the conversion. A freshly converted file often looks flat, so set a true black and a true white before shaping the midtones.

  • Steer the light with dodging and burning to guide the eye through the frame.

  • Finish with light grain when the photo should feel like film. Texture carries more weight once color is gone.
