Intervalometer

An intervalometer is a timer that fires a camera's shutter automatically at set intervals. Why photographers use an intervalometer

The most common job is a time-lapse. The camera takes hundreds of frames at a fixed gap, one shot every five seconds for example, and software later assembles them into a video where clouds race and shadows crawl.

Star trails work the same way. Instead of one extreme long exposure, the camera shoots many 30-second frames back to back, and stacking software blends them into a single image where the stars draw arcs across the sky. Shorter frames keep noise low, and a ruined frame can be dropped without losing the whole night.

An intervalometer also replaces the self-timer for self-portraits. A self-timer takes one frame per button press, while an intervalometer keeps firing, so the photographer can stay in front of the lens and change poses between shots. Firing the camera without touching it also removes the small camera shake caused by pressing the shutter button.

Tips for using an intervalometer

  • Lock the camera on a tripod. Frames only line up when the camera never moves.

  • Set the interval longer than the shutter speed. A 30-second exposure needs a gap of at least 31 seconds, and for star trails a one-second gap keeps the trails unbroken.

  • Switch to manual mode and manual focus. When autofocus hunts or auto exposure reacts to passing clouds, sharpness and brightness jump between frames and the sequence flickers.
