Drive Mode
Drive mode is the camera setting that decides what happens when the shutter button is pressed: one photo, a stream of photos for as long as the button stays down, or a photo after a short delay. On many cameras it lives on a dial or button marked with a single rectangle, a stack of rectangles, and a clock face; on others it sits in the shooting menu. Phones hide a version behind a long press. The setting changes nothing about exposure or focus; it only controls how many frames the camera records and when.
Alberto stacked three consecutive frames of his cat Marx mid-yawn, shot on a Sony A7S at 1/400s. In continuous drive the camera kept firing while the button stayed pressed, so the whole yawn was recorded instead of one guess at its peak.
How drive mode affects photography
Single shot takes one photo per press and is the default on most cameras. It suits landscapes, portraits, still life, and any subject that holds still. A nervous finger cannot fire three frames by accident.
Continuous drive, often split into low and high speeds, records frame after frame while the button is held. This is the setting behind burst mode. Low speed, around 3 to 5 frames per second, suits walking people and slow gestures. High speed, 10 frames per second and up, is for sports, birds in flight, and children who refuse to hold a pose. Paired with continuous autofocus (AF-C), it raises the odds of catching a decisive moment sharp. The cost is a long culling session afterward.
Self-timer waits a set delay, usually 2 or 10 seconds, before the shutter fires. The 2-second delay lets a camera on a tripod settle after the button press, which removes the small camera shake a fingertip causes during a long exposure. The 10-second delay gives the photographer time to step into a group photo or a self-portrait.
Many cameras file more options under the same menu. Bracketing fires a set of frames at different exposures with one press. An interval timer fires one frame every few seconds for a time-lapse, the job an external intervalometer once did. Some bodies also place the silent electronic shutter here.
Tips for working with drive mode
Check the setting first. A forgotten self-timer means a puzzling 10-second wait, and a forgotten high-speed burst fills a card with near-duplicates.
Use the 2-second timer instead of a remote. On a tripod it gives the same shake-free result at no cost.
Match the speed to the subject. Low continuous for street and events, high continuous for wildlife and sport.
Shoot short bursts. Two or three frames around the peak of the action beat a ten-second hold that overflows the buffer.
Return to single shot when the action ends. It is the safest setting to leave on the camera between shoots.

Continuous is the better choice only when the subject moves faster than a finger can react, such as sports, wildlife, and children at play.

Continuous low runs at around 3 to 5 frames per second and suits walking people, street scenes, and events, where a small spread of moments is enough. Burst mode is one option inside drive mode. Drive mode is the whole menu: single shot, continuous, self-timer, and often bracketing and interval shooting. Burst mode, also called continuous shooting, is the setting that fires many frames while the button stays pressed. Phones use the word burst for the same idea. So every camera in burst mode has its drive set to continuous, but drive mode covers more than bursts.
Pressing the shutter button moves the camera slightly, and during a slow exposure that movement shows up as blur. The 2-second self-timer adds a pause between the press and the exposure, so the camera settles on its tripod before the shutter opens. The result is the same as using a remote release, with nothing extra to carry. The 10-second timer serves a different purpose: it gives the photographer time to get into the frame.
The drive is set to continuous, often left over from an earlier shoot. In this mode the camera fires for as long as the button is held, and even a quick press can record two or three frames.
