ICC Profile

An ICC profile is a small data file that describes how one device or one color space shows color. The letters stand for the International Color Consortium, the group that set the standard in 1993. A camera, a monitor, a printer, and a sheet of photo paper each turn the same color numbers into a slightly different color. The profile records how far each one strays from a shared reference. Color-managed software reads the profile at both ends and translates the numbers, so a red that looks right on screen comes out as the same red on paper.

Every JPEG or TIFF can carry an embedded profile, most often sRGB, Adobe RGB, or Display P3. The embedded profile tells a browser or editor what the numbers in the file mean. When the profile is missing, software assumes sRGB. An Adobe RGB file with no profile looks flat and dull online, the most common way a photo loses color between export and upload.

A monitor profile comes from calibration. A colorimeter hangs on the screen, measures a set of color patches, and writes a profile the operating system loads at startup. Without it, a screen can run too blue or too bright, and every edit made on it inherits the error. A color cast that exists only on the screen gets baked into the file when the photographer corrects for it.

A printer profile describes one printer, one ink set, and one paper. Paper makers publish these files for free, and print labs supply their own. Editing software uses it to preview the print on screen and to send the right numbers to the printer. RAW files carry no profile of their own. Tips for working with ICC profiles

  • Export web images as sRGB and tick the embed color profile box. A tagged sRGB file looks the same in every browser.

  • Calibrate the monitor with a hardware colorimeter every month or two. Adjusting a screen by eye does not produce a trustworthy profile.

  • Download the profile for the exact printer and paper pair from the paper maker, install it, and pick it in the print dialog.

  • Turn off color management in the printer driver when the editing software applies the profile. Running the correction twice gives oversaturated prints.

  • Check the exported file for a profile before touching saturation when a photo looks dull after upload.

  • Convert to the destination profile instead of assigning it. Converting keeps the colors and changes the numbers; assigning keeps the numbers and shifts the colors.
