Color Cast
A color cast is an unwanted tint spread across a whole photograph, so whites, grays, and skin all lean toward one color. Most casts come from the light source. Household bulbs push a frame toward orange, fluorescent tubes toward green, and open shade or twilight toward blue. Each source has its own color temperature, and when the camera's white balance guesses wrong, the tint stays in the file. Light bouncing off a colored wall, ceiling, or lawn adds a cast too, and so do old film scans and tinted filters.
The sky and sea in this film scan are meant to be blue, but the white sun hat has gone blue as well. The photographer checked it with the white balance eyedropper and found the whole frame carried a blue cast straight from the scan. A white object reading as another color is the quickest way to spot a cast, because the eye knows what color it should be.
How color cast affects photography
A cast changes every color in the frame at once. A small orange cast makes skin look sunburned, and a green one makes it look ill. A blue cast flattens warm wood and makes food look cold. The brain corrects for tinted light in real life, so a scene can look neutral at the time and come out tinted in the photo.
Not every cast is a mistake. The warm glow of golden hour and the deep blue of blue hour are tints photographers keep on purpose, and color grading adds a chosen tint for mood. The difference is intent: a color cast is a tint nobody asked for. Color correction is the editing step that removes it, usually by setting a neutral white balance first.
Casts also hide on a tinted monitor, where every photo looks warm or cool for the same reason. A gray card or another known neutral in the scene is a more reliable reference than the eye.

Shoot in RAW format. RAW files keep the full color data, so white balance can move a long way in editing without banding.
Match white balance to the light. Pick the tungsten, fluorescent, or shade preset, or set a Kelvin value, instead of leaving auto to guess under artificial light.
Photograph a gray card or a white sheet in the first frame, then click it with the white balance eyedropper in editing.
Turn off one source under mixed light. A room with window light and warm lamps carries two casts, and one setting cannot fix both.
Watch what the light bounces off. Bounce flash from a wooden ceiling arrives orange, and a lawn throws green up onto faces.
Zoom in on whites, grays, and skin before trusting a frame. A white shirt reading yellow or a gray sidewalk reading blue means the frame has a cast.
