Perspective. The relationship between objects and space in a photo. It’s a technique that transforms a flat, two-dimensional image into something almost three-dimensional. Using lines, space, and shape, an image can be structured to emphasize movement, scale, and visual flow. It’s one of the most powerful tools we have as creators, available to anyone with a camera and an inkling of intention.
Parallel lines, vanishing points, depth, dimension. Foreground, middle ground, background. All of these elements come into play when shooting with perspective in mind. Perspective allows the viewer to see what you see. At its best expression, this versatile technique dives deeper into experience and adds story.
Depending on your subject, making a photograph can be challenging. Shifting light, temperamental gear, unruly subjects, or fast-moving environments, can all leave you feeling at the mercy of circumstance. Perspective gives some of the agency back. You might not be able to control everything, but the point of view? Solely yours.
