Why photographers use strobes

Consistency matters as much. A strobe fires at the same power every frame, so exposure stays steady across a full portrait or product session. Most strobes also include a modeling lamp, a continuous bulb that shows where shadows will fall before the flash fires. Their mounts hold large modifiers such as a softbox, beauty dish, or umbrella that would overwhelm a small flash.
Strobes come in two forms. A monolight packs the flash tube, controls, and power supply into one self-contained head. A pack-and-head system splits them, with a separate power pack feeding one or more lighter heads. Monolights are the common choice for home studios and for off-camera flash work on location.
Tips for working with strobes
Start with one strobe and one modifier. A single head with a softbox and a reflector covers most portrait setups.
Switch the camera to manual mode. Strobes fire at a set power, and auto exposure modes cannot predict the burst.
