Slide Film
Slide film is photographic film that produces a positive image directly on the film base. After development, each frame shows the scene in its real colors and tones, ready to view on a light table or project onto a screen. Slide film is also called reversal film or transparency film. Most color slide film develops in the E-6 chemical process, and well-known stocks include Kodak Ektachrome, Fujifilm Velvia, and Fujifilm Provia.
Negative film works the other way. It records tones and colors inverted, and the image only reads correctly after printing or scanning. With slide film, the developed strip is the finished photograph.

Why photographers use slide film
Slide film is prized for color. Editors judged each transparency directly on a light table, with no print in between.
The trade-off is a small margin for error. Slide film records a narrower dynamic range than negative film, so bright skies wash out and shadows fall to black sooner. An exposure that misses by one stop can ruin a frame. Many photographers treat this as training: shooting slides forces careful metering and deliberate choices.
Tips for shooting slide film
Expose for the highlights. A blown highlight on a slide is gone for good, while slightly dark areas often keep usable detail.
Use spot metering or bracketing in high-contrast scenes to protect the tones that matter most.
Shoot at box speed. Slide film responds poorly to push processing, so keep the ISO where the maker rated it.
Pick soft or even light for contrasty subjects. Harsh midday sun holds more range than a slide can record.
Store exposed rolls cool and develop them soon after shooting. Most film labs run the E-6 process in house or send rolls out by mail.
