Highlights and shadows are the brightest and darkest areas of a photograph. Highlights are the tones closest to pure white, like a sunlit wall or the shine on water. Shadows are the tones closest to pure black, like the dark side of a face or the ground under a tree. Midtones fill the space between, and together the three zones make up an image's tonal range.

How highlights and shadows affect photography

Exposure decides where highlights and shadows fall. A brighter exposure pushes tones toward the highlight end; a darker one pushes them into shadow. A histogram maps the spread, with shadows stacked on the left and highlights on the right. When a highlight clips to pure white, its detail is gone for good; that is overexposure. When a shadow blocks up to solid black, texture disappears there too. A camera's dynamic range sets how much of both one frame can hold.

The balance between the two also sets the mood of an image. A wide gap between bright and dark reads as high contrast, like hard light raking across a wall at noon. A narrow gap looks soft and calm, like an overcast day. Shadow-heavy frames feel moody and dramatic, while bright, open frames feel light and airy.

Tips for working with highlights and shadows

  • Check the histogram after a shot. Pixels piled against either edge mean detail was lost in the highlights or the shadows.

  • Protect the highlights. On digital cameras, dark shadows recover better in editing than blown highlights, which stay pure white forever.

  • Shoot RAW in contrasty scenes. RAW files keep extra headroom for lifting shadows and pulling highlights back.
