Bounce Flash

Bounce flash is a way of using flash where the head points at a ceiling, wall, or another pale surface instead of straight at the subject. The surface reflects the burst back as a wider, softer spread of light. The small flash tube turns into a light source the size of the patch it lights up, so shadows fall gently and faces keep their shape. Most speedlights support the technique with a head that tilts up and swivels sideways, whether the unit sits on the hot shoe or fires away from the camera.

Why photographers use bounce flash

Direct flash from the camera position makes flat faces, hard shadows on the wall behind the subject, and red eye. Bouncing the same burst off a white ceiling changes the light in two ways. The source grows from a few centimeters to a meter or more across, which produces soft light with smooth shadow edges. And the light arrives from above instead of head-on, so it looks like ordinary room light rather than a camera flash.

Event and wedding photographers lean on bounce flash indoors because it gets close to the look of a softbox without stands or modifiers. The technique works with the unit on the camera or in an off-camera flash setup. The trade-off is control: the surface decides the color and direction of the light, and a tall or dark ceiling returns too little of the burst to matter.

Tips for working with bounce flash

  • Aim at white or pale surfaces: A colored ceiling or wall tints the light with its own color. Small casts are fixable with white balance correction in editing; strong casts on skin are not.

  • Tilt 45 to 90 degrees: Under a standard ceiling, a 45- to 60-degree tilt lights a subject a few meters away. Straight up suits close subjects.

  • Swivel toward a wall for direction: Bouncing off a wall beside or behind the camera turns it into a large side light with more shape than a ceiling bounce gives.

  • Add two to three stops: The light path is longer and the surface absorbs part of the burst, so bounce flash needs more flash power, a wider aperture, or a higher ISO than direct flash.

  • Pull out the bounce card: The small white card in many speedlight heads pushes a sliver of light forward, filling shadows under the brows and adding a catchlight to each eye.

  • Watch the ceiling: High halls, black ceilings, and open sky give the burst nothing to reflect off. Direct flash with a diffuser is the fallback.
