The magic of family.
Photograph by Lisa Weingardt
What makes a good family photo? Maybe it’s catching that quick smirk from a teenager. Maybe it’s all the outfits, hair, and lighting coming together to show your family at their most complimentary. Maybe it’s the giggles that erupt from your toddler, the sweet smiles from little sister, or the warm hugs prompted by a good vibe.
Of course we’re talking about when things go well on picture day. More often than not, family portraits can be stressful, difficult, and high pressure. Clothing that looked great on the hanger falls flat on the body. Somebody spills a juice box on their white dress. Someone else overlooked the snack bag, and suddenly several hangry little people have to be convinced to “smile one more time for the camera!”
The expectations for a portrait session are often high. The reality rarely rises to the occasion. A good family portrait photographer knows this, and prepares. She knows the stress of getting out the door on time, the potential awkwardness of posing, and the challenges of getting everyone’s best expression in-camera for multiple shots.
Lisa Weingardt knows exactly what she's doing.
Have a look at any of her portrait Series. The light is warm, the expressions are genuine, and the results are intimate but remarkably professional. Her compositions feel organic, not robotic; this balance usually comes from a photographer who deeply understands direction. In larger family groupings, creating visual harmony can be difficult. But Lisa's technical ability matches her artistic one. No matter the number of people being photographed, she her compositions have visual flow, with emphasis in all the right places.
The expressions in Lisa's photographs also reveal a photographer with a natural talent for connection. Her subjects appear relaxed, engaged, and genuinely happy to be there. From dads to toddlers, Lisa is able to draw out heartfelt moments, regardless of age. That's no small accomplishment.
Family portraits come with logistical hurdles, shifting moods, and unpredictability. But Lisa's images feel warm, easy, and full of joy. They suggest not only technical skill, but an ability to make people feel comfortable enough to just be themselves. Absolute magic, friends.
