June's Monthly Category — Flat Lay
Perspective is everything!
Photograph by Wayland.
This month, we’re doing something a little different: flat lay photography.
What makes a flat lay different from an aerial shot? We're glad you asked.
For one thing, flat lays tend to be product shots, or still life subject work. They're photographed directly from above, usually over a flat surface, creating a small-scale view of a subject or scene. Composition plays a huge role in these images. The placement of objects, the use of negative space, and the relationships between shapes within the frame all come together to create a successful flat lay. Living things need not be left out. Plants, animals, and people count, as long as they are photographed from directly above.
So, empty your camera bag and arrange your gear in a fun way. Capture your kiddo immersed in creative play from overhead. Photograph a special collection, your dinner, your workspace, or even create a novel self portrait. An overhead shot of your coffee? Absolutely. An elaborate meal or table styling? Groovy. Whether you choose minimal scenes that breathe or maximalist layering, the key is perspective and intentional arrangement.
Last month, we kept things simple with a revisit of the black & white category. This time, we're exploring something more niche, and perhaps a style of shooting you might not gravitate to.
Ready for the challenge?
